About Shahre Naghashi (the Drawing Town)

Shahre Naghashi (the Drawing Town) Background

The concept of Shahre Naghashi was conceived by Arash Badrtalei, who drew inspiration from a collection of images and a story derived from his personal visual experiences. This narrative was transformed into a highly acclaimed theatrical production titled "Letters from Drawing Town", which was successfully staged by Valise Theatre Company in Canada in 2017.

However, "Letters from Drawing Town” transcended its theatrical origins and evolved into a source of inspiration for the development of innovative and imaginative art education programs for children. Following two years of meticulous planning and conducting experimental workshops, Arash Badrtalei officially established the Drawing Town institute in 2018. The institute's main philosophy is rooted in the principles and ideas explored in "Letters from Drawing Town ".

Such instruction is based on imagination and individuality of learners, aiming to cultivate a profound appreciation of art among children rather than focusing solely on technical skills. Such training seeks to provoke discovery of interdisciplinary art relationship.

This institute has held several exhibits of its students’ works. Valise Company has also put on a theater show of “Letters from Drawing Town” in different languages such as English and French and has achieved success. This theatrical production has been chosen as a nominated piece in the following venues:

Montréal’s Municipal Culture and Arts Center for public show in its related stages from 2021 to 2022

Toronto International Children’s Art Festival for public show in Toronto in 2022

Bolivian Art and Culture Center for public show in fall, 2022
